May 17, 2016FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chevy Chase, MD- The Chevy Chase Land Company is pleased to announce that Nahom Tesfatsion, of Silver Spring, Maryland, is this year’s recipient of the “CCLC Smart Growth Scholarship.”
“I am so happy to have won this scholarship,” said Mr. Tesfatsion, a graduating B-CC High School Senior. “I moved with my family from Eritrea only five years ago, and since then I have worked very hard in school so that I could study engineering in college,” he continued. “This scholarship will make it easier for me to pursue a degree, and one day I hope to return to Eritrea and work on environmental and infrastructure issues there.” Mr. Tesfatsion will be attending the University of Maryland-College Park in the fall.
The $5000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating B-CC High School student intending to pursue a career in the fields of architecture, engineering, or land use/transportation planning. The purpose of the scholarship is to support and prepare young professionals who will be planning and building healthy, environmentally sustainable, and connected communities.
“It’s always hard to choose among such excellent students,” said Carole Brand, Vice President of the B-CC High School Educational Foundation. “But Nahom’s commitment to his education and his ability to overcome obstacles was apparent, and we believe he will make excellent use of this opportunity,” she added.
The Land Company has been a long-time supporter of the B-CC High School Educational Foundation, and has already donated and pledged a total of $40,000 to help fund its efforts to ensure that every B-CC High School student can succeed academically. The Land Company’s additional sponsorship of the CCLC Smart Growth Scholarship reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting young people in the local community.
“Our goal is to help inspire young people to work for solutions to the local and global sustainability challenges of the future,” said Tom Regnell, the Land Company’s President and CEO. “We continue to be impressed with the quality of the student body at B-CC High School, and believe that these young people will accomplish great things.”
Tom Regnell will formally award the CCLC Smart Growth Scholarship to Nahom Tesfatsion at the B-CC High School Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 19, 2016 at 7 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held in the B-CC High School auditorium.
